A distinguished Taiwanese jazz pianist, Xu Congyi seamlessly blends a rigorous classical foundation with expressive improvisation. Since studying under Chang Kaiya in 2004, he has become a mainstay at the Taichung Jazz Festival and a sought-after collaborator for artists like Ilid Kaolo and Shunsuke Kikuta. Currently a faculty member at Dong Hwa University and a member of 'Duowise,' Xu’s versatile musicality and warm touch continue to enrich the contemporary jazz scene.
Xu Congyi is a distinguished Taiwanese jazz pianist, celebrated for his versatile musicality that seamlessly blends a strong classical foundation with expressive jazz improvisation. A graduate of Chinese Culture University with a major in Piano and a minor in Theory and Composition, he began his musical journey as a church pianist. In 2004, he embarked on his jazz career under the tutelage of Chang Kaiya, performing extensively across Taipei's music venues. Xu has been a consistent presence at the Taichung Jazz Festival and served as a piano instructor at the Taichung Jazz Camp in 2010 and the 2022 MI Workshop. His diverse collaborations include performing with the Shih Yin-Yin Jazz Band, indigenous singer Ilid Kaolo, and the 2011 'We All Love Lee Tai-hsiang' concert. Since 2011, he has worked with international artists such as drummer Daisuke Neishi, guitarist Shunsuke Kikuta, and singer David Chen. His cross-disciplinary work includes Li Yunling's 'The Taste of Time' concert series (2014) and calligrapher Tong Yang-tze's 'Sao+' calligraphy art theater (2015–2021). He is an integral member of various ensembles, including the 'Qing Cong Jazz Duo', 'Duowise Cong Ming Duo', 'Amoeba Jazz Band', 'Lemon Flavor Jazz Band', and 'OJS48'. He is a regular performer at Blue Note in Taipei and has performed at venues such as J House and WiJazz Records. He currently educates aspiring musicians at National Dong Hwa University.
