Dongyi (Lee Dong Hee) is a South Korean double bassist, electric bassist, composer, and improvisor known for his profound exploration of identity and sound. He studied Jazz Improvisation at the Baekje Institute of the Arts from 2008 to 2010. His musical perspective was significantly shaped by his military service between 2011 and 2013, during which he was stationed at the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the 38th parallel—an experience that prompted deep reflection on the history and national consciousness of the Korean Peninsula. Dongyi has refined his artistic practice through intensive workshops with world-class masters, including bassist Dave Holland, drummer Antonio Sanchez, bassist Abraham LaBoriel, pianist Kenny Werner, and Jetro Da Silva. Following an invitation from Im In Gun, a pioneering figure in Korean jazz, to return to Jeju Island, Dongyi embarked on a musical journey tracing the path of modernization through Jeju, Osaka, Tokyo, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Taiwan. In these locations, he has focused on creating contemporary forms of Dang-ak, Aa-ak, and Samhan-ak. His work includes the album project "A Method for Analyzing Capsaicin" in Taiwan, and he has performed at notable venues such as Sappho Live Jazz. His practice is documented by Tingshuo Studio and the JazzNode database.
