Kung Chi Shing
Kung Chi Shing is a prominent Hong Kong experimental musician, composer, and curator. Trained in the US under George Crumb, he is a pivotal figure in local music development. As Head of Contemporary Performance at West Kowloon Cultural District, he spearheads the Freespace Jazz Fest, blending boundary-pushing jazz with multi-disciplinary arts. His work bridges avant-garde experimentation and community engagement, fostering a vibrant, innovative sonic landscape in Hong Kong.
Kung Chi Shing is a prominent Hong Kong-based experimental musician, composer, music activist, and sound artist recognized as one of the city’s boldest sonic experimenters. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kung studied classical music and composition in the United States under the guidance of Allen Trubitt and George Crumb. He is a steadfast advocate for local music development, dedicated to nurturing musical talent and building new audiences. In 2015, he joined the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) as Artistic Associate (Music) and currently serves as the Head of Contemporary Performance. In this capacity, he has been responsible for developing a series of innovative and popular programs, including Freespace Fest, Freespace Happening, and the Freespace Jazz Fest. His curatorial vision for the Freespace Jazz Fest focuses on boundary-pushing live jazz combined with dance and workshops, offering a distinct alternative to established international jazz festivals. His recent performance history includes appearances at venues such as CODA Jazz Kissa.
