Andy Jaffe is a distinguished American jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator with a prolific career spanning over four decades. He is widely recognized for his sophisticated arrangements and his profound impact on jazz pedagogy. Jaffe served as the Director of Jazz Studies at Williams College for 27 years, where he founded the jazz program, and taught at the Berklee College of Music for over 25 years. His educational influence is global, having taught at the Institut Musical de formation Professionelle in Nimes, France; the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and in Taiwan at the Tainan National University of the Arts and the National Taipei University of the Arts (Impact Music Program). He is a recipient of the IAJE "Outstanding Service to Jazz Education" award and authored the seminal textbook "Jazz Harmony," which is considered a staple in jazz curricula worldwide. As a recording artist, Jaffe has released several acclaimed albums. His 2020 release, "Chorinhoso," showcases his original Brazilian-influenced compositions and was praised by Downbeat for its "lush and impeccably voiced" orchestrations. Other notable works include "Arc" (2016), featuring the Interestring Quartet from Taipei; "Manhattan Projections," featuring former students Branford Marsalis and Wallace Roney; "An Imperfect Storm," featuring the Slovak Radio Orchestra; and "Double Helix," a piano duo with the late Tom McClung. He has collaborated with jazz luminaries such as Max Roach, Bill Barron, and Jimmy Greene. Recently, he launched the "Intercurrents" project with guitarist Roy Patterson, paying homage to the classic Bill Evans and Jim Hall guitar-piano duos. Jaffe continues to perform internationally, including regular appearances at Blue Note Taipei.
