The Matthew Chan Quartet is a modern jazz ensemble led by pianist Matthew Chan, a graduate of the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. Currently active in both Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, the group features guitarist Bobo Yuen, electric bassist Chun Leung, and drummer Jerry Kan. Each member is an active participant in diverse music scenes, bringing a wealth of broad performance experience to the stage. The quartet’s repertoire focuses on contemporary jazz, blending Chan’s original compositions with works by influential figures such as Robert Glasper and Brad Mehldau. Their sound seeks a delicate balance between the rhythmic groove of Neo-Soul and the atmospheric, tranquil textures associated with the ECM aesthetic, exploring the possibilities of rhythm, harmony, and spatial depth. Describing his creative vision, Matthew Chan offers a series of evocative and personal images: a "Rise and Shine" where the sun glows green; a "Blackbird" glimpsed under a purple umbrella; the organic scent of wooden textures; Qoo grape juice; and a notebook cleverly disguised as a Bible. For listeners of modern jazz and Neo-Soul, the quartet offers a deeply personal and exploratory experience that invites the audience to embrace spontaneous musical moments.
