A graduate of the National Dong Hwa University Department of Music, specializing in Jazz Studies, this artist was profoundly inspired by the limitless possibilities of improvisational music during their academic tenure. This pivotal encounter sparked a lifelong dedication to exploring the intricate relationship between sound and aesthetic beauty. Today, they continue to push creative boundaries, blending technical expertise with a deep, philosophical approach to sonic exploration and contemporary musical expression.
Xu Rui is a jazz bassist and a graduate of National Dong Hwa University's Jazz program. Inspired by improvisational music during her studies, she embarked on a journey to explore sound and beauty, developing her unique voice under the guidance of notable musicians including Tsai Wen-Hui, Fil Caporali, and Eric Thielemans. Rooted in jazz training, Xu Rui's performance philosophy deconstructs conventional structures and frameworks, responding to her environment by seeking fluidity in energy and sound boundaries, while exploring the coexistence and transformation of opposing concepts. Her music is distinctly slow, quiet, and minimalist, evolving organically like a plant over time. She performs a diverse range of genres, including traditional and modern jazz, folk, and free improvisation, and is active in performance venues and alternative spaces throughout Taiwan, including performances at J House.
