The Tamjai Quartet is led by local jazz guitarist Tam Jai, who is currently completing his studies in his university's music department. In recent years, Tam Jai has become an active presence in the Hong Kong jazz scene, performing at various restaurants and venues to build extensive live experience. His musical approach focuses on re-arranging jazz standards, blending diverse jazz elements while expressing a personal interpretation of traditional repertoire. For his graduation recital at CODA, Tam Jai is joined by pianist Anson, bassist Chun, and drummer Wai to present a tribute to the legendary bebop pianist and educator Barry Harris (1929–2021). Harris was a pivotal figure whose insights into harmonic movement, voice leading, and improvisational language profoundly shaped generations of musicians. The quartet reinterprets Harris’s specific arrangements of jazz standards—works known for preserving original melodies while incorporating sophisticated harmonic colors and rhythmic ideas. This ensemble offers listeners an opportunity to witness the growth of a new generation of musicians as they explore the dialogue between traditional bebop vocabulary and modern jazz.
